What the territory offers
San Gimignano is part of the area, in the Sienese territory, called Alta Val d’Elsa in which are also included the towns of Casole d’Elsa, Colle di Val D’Elsa, Monteriggini, Poggibonsi and Radicondoli whose development began in the Middle Ages. The City has been part of the UNESCO places since 1990.
The whole territory was affected by the passage of the Via Francigena.
A border area between the Tuscan powers of the time, Florence and Siena, it was often the scene of wars between opposing factions.
In 1199 the War of Casaglia saw troops from Colle and San Gimignano fighting against Poggibonsi until boundaries and domains were reviewed and scrupulously established.
Instead, in 1269 the bloodiest battle of Colle took place, pitting Colle and Florence against Siena, with the latter’s scorching defeat.
As the identities of the various local realities developed more or less definitively, the cities of the Upper Valdelsa continued to develop and establish themselves over time.
